I'm 21 years old, and I started college 8 years ago. I was once considered a child prodigy because I started college full time when I was 13. I was removed from that program, though, when I was 15 and placed back in high school. I've blown away every standardized test I've ever taken, which is what got me into college at that age in the first place.
Some called me a genius, and a few still do. It doesn't matter, though. I've slacked my way through a mediocre education that I stopped caring about long ago. I graduate in a few weeks, bringing my time in college to an end.
I told people that I'd be applying to law school at Stanford and Berkeley, but I didn't. I even filled out the applications and had them ready to send, but I didn't and I don't know why. Instead I put a knife to my wrists and contemplated to pros and cons of dragging along the skin. I never did it, but I've been depressed ever since.
I got into a mediocre law school eventually, and I don't know if I even really want to go.
I think sometimes of what is and what could have been and I cry. I cry for a future that was so readily within my grasp had I not sabotoged everything, like I always do. I cry because I'm too messed up to function as a normal adult in college life. this pale facsimily of real responsibility. And I cry because I've wasted a talent that could have been something special.
I could have been a contender.
I pray sometimes that I may still be.
